San Diego

During the 1980s and 1990s, San Diego cultivated thriving hardcore and straight-edge scenes, fostering the likes of Amenity, Drive Like Jehu (and ensuing bands Rocket From The Crypt and Hot Snakes), and Unbroken.  Gravity Records also spawned an influential underground 90's art punk movement that spread throughout the basements of America with local SD bands like Heroin, Antioch Arrow, and Clikatat Ikatowi.  It's a sound that seems sort of at odds with such a warm, sunny place, but the city's musical community has always balanced the scales with healthy doses of reggae and ska bands. Members of Pinback and Black Heart Procession also notably manage studios in town, incubating a steady diet of new artists.
