WARP MAGIC BUS TOUR
And Other Interesting Tidbits
The good folks at Warp are taking their show on the road. Really! On
May 8 they're going to shut down the London office and embark on a
month-long 25-city European jaunt (affectionately dubbed the Warp
Magic Bus Tour) during which the Warp collective will visit the UK,
Ireland, France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, and
Greece. Each date will be different, but the artists who will be on
hand include Plaid, Prefuse73, Mira Calix, Phoenecia, Richard Devine,
Luke Vibert, and Russell Haswell, as well as additional DJs, plus
new Warp film work, other visual stuff, and lots of surprises.
Warp has also pressed a Magic Tour Bus CD, to be available at each
tour date.

BUCK EXONERATED
Finally, remember R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck's little bout of air
rage aboard a London-bound British Airways flight last spring? In
case you've forgotten, Buck reportedly got drunk and belligerent,
attempted to attack the crew, claimed that a perfect stranger was
his wife, and sprayed other passengers with yogurt, before being
handcuffed upon his arrival at Heathrow. Well, we're sure you'll be
thrilled to know that Mr. Buck has been found innocent of two counts
of assault on air crew, one charge of being drunk on an aircraft,
and one charge of destroying airplane crockery.
Buck's lawyer praised the ruling, saying that "the decision sends a
strong message to rock stars everywhere that society still expects
them to act like complete louts in public." Meanwhile a spokesman
for the Mikula twins, the 22-year old aspiring models from Buckley,
Michigan who were jailed in Anchorage, Alaska for two weeks following
their own air rage incident last April on board a flight to Shanghai,
decried the decision as a "gross injustice" which "reveals once again
the unfair double standard enjoyed by today's celebrities."
"Squance"
by
Plaid
Plaid's folksy electronic music fuses elements of Detroit techno, acid house, and so-called IDM. Since forming in '88, the duo has inspired a generation of bedroom producers with their groundbreaking releases on Black Dog Productions, R&S, and Warp.
"Swing Lite - Alright"
by
Luke Vibert/BJ Cole
Legendary pedal steel guitar player BJ Cole teams up with avant-garde electronic producer Luke Vibert (aka Plug and Wagon Christ) to stimulate your non-conformist aural senses. If Salvador Dali had had an E-mu instead of an easel, he would have made tracks like this.
"Dirty Politician"
by
Hakan Lidbo
You can find Hakan Lidbo's low-slung tech-house grooves on a mind-boggling number of European labels, such as Paper, Force-Trax, Pokerflat, and Loaded. More recently, the Swedish king of house music spread his wings stateside via Transmat, Plastic City, Fiji, and Worship.
"A Panel Of Experts"
by
Solvent
Toronto's Jason Amm produces an instantly addictive and achingly beautiful classic electro sound, appreciating New Wave while forging a refreshing new path.
"Redemption"
by
Timeblind
Timeblind, a self-confessed migrant worker at heart, claims to have evolved into an amphibian after a brief spell playing tuba with the Jewish navy. Although I have a sneaky suspicion he's telling porky pies, his vivid imagination is very much apparent in his production.
"Designer Drugs"
by
Ben Nevile
Vancouver's Ben Nevile makes house music, drinks wine, and lies frequently. Nordic Trax love him, and so do we.
"Glued Smile"
by
Lowfish
You've never heard 808 beats sound this good. Canada's Lowfish offers a brand of crunchy electro that brings out the robot in all of us.
"1234"
by
Golden Boy with Miss Kittin
When he's working under his Golden Boy guise, Swiss artist and photographer Stefan Altenburger delivers sleek electro-pop that's stylish, seductive, and very European.
"Bird Song"
by
The Underwolves
London hipsters The Underwolves parted company with Island Records to be with the Jazzanova-run JCR label. Their dynamic fusion of drum and bass, soul, and hip hop is perfect for Germany's premier nu-jazz imprint.
"Point of View Point"
by
Cornelius
Everyone's favorite Japanese genre-hopping mischief-making hipster continues to turn out some of the most dazzlingly strange and virtuosically acrobatic records around.
"If My Heart Ever Ran Away It Would Be Looking For The Day When Right Beside You It Could Forever Stay"
by
Kid606
Kid606 is the musical equivalent of your new best friend, your worst enemy, and your secret lover, all wrapped into one. His ever-shifting electronic styles are always mind-altering and brain-boggling.
"Moments"
by
Ben Mono
If it doesn't have a breakbeat, Bavarian beat assassin Paul Beller doesn't want to know about it. His drum and bass and nu-jazz has featured on labels such as Spinning Wheel, Hospital, and Compost.
"The Crow"
by
DJ Food
DJ Food is a collective of like-minded musical geniuses headed by Ninja Tune's PC and Strictly Kev. Their cut-and-paste downtempo is often imitated but rarely duplicated.
"Deep South"
by
Layo & Bushwacka!
Layo and Bushwacka! take the best elements of acid, house, techno, and breakbeat to create a brand new dance sound for the naughties. This is inspirational future music from two London producers who refuse to be pigeonholed.
