TRS-80 are a Chicago-based trio who mix up live drums, samples, and an array of vintage analog circuitry to create pulsing hypnotic sound collages. Their unique sound explores the boundaries of today's electronic underground, while delivering head-bobbing grooves that keep the listener entranced. On their second album, Industry Needs Electronic Skills, TRS-80 draw from an eclectic pool of influences, and put the pieces back together to create a unique, unpredictable, and highly listenable soundscape. Their third full-length output, The Manhattan Love Machine, fuses '80s electro with industrial breakbeat and coarse downtempo grooves.
With their fourth album, Mr. Kickass, TRS-80 discovered the power in patience, allowing a slower pace to create the mood with their patented analog hodgepodge of loops and sounds. But a move to File 13 Records in 2003 yielded Shake Hands With Danger, on which TRS-80 takes a manic ADD approach to their influences. Somehow staying between the ditches aesthetically, the group mixes in the kitchen sink and more frantically but skillfully on this one.
One of the band's strongest features is its live show. Using a live drummer and almost anything they can plug in, TRS-80 delivers a full-on sonic experience with the drive of Renegade Soundwave and the complexity of Kraftwerk.
