Timo Maas
Kinetic Records

It's a pretty standard story. Small-town boy has a passion for music, starts collecting records in his early teens, and forms a mobile DJ service playing everything from Earth Wind & Fire to Chaka Khan at weddings and bar mitzvahs. Along comes acid house and techno, whisking small-town boy off his feet and into the warehouse, where he plies his trade on a pair of Technics. What's not so standard about this story is the fact that Timo Maas originates from Buckeburg, Germany, and that his rise to fame happened unusually fast. In the early '90s no one had heard of Timo Maas, but by '94, with a residency at The Tunnel in Hamburg, Mr. Maas was ready to step into the studio. His debut, "The Final XS," on LiTime Records, was well-received and led to a flurry of releases on FFRR, Hooj Choons, Lakota, and more recently, Hope Recordings, Bush, and Perfecto.

Still, it wasn't until '97, and the release of "Mama Konda" (as Orinoko), that Timo Maas would achieve celebrity status. The track hit top 20 in the U.K. and U.S. club charts and was hammered by everyone from John Digweed to David Morales. In '00, Maas reworked "Doom's Night" by Azzido Da Bass, which made it into the top ten of the U.K. national charts. This coincided rather nicely with the release of his album Music For The Maases on Bristol's Hope Recordings. So there you have it. Now firmly established as the hottest new techno/trance DJ on the block, Timo Maas is in demand for both his mixing and studio skills. Not ones to miss a trick, New York's Kinetic label commissioned a two-CD mix release from the Maas, entitled Connected. If you can't make it to a niterie to hear the man play live, this is the next best thing.
