The Sorts
Slowdime Records
Washington DC's The Sorts, featuring former members of Hoover and Rain Like the Sound of Trains, continue to grow in their cohesion and instrumental prowess. Since their last release, The Sorts have obviously begun to read each other's minds and get into a certain state of consciousness on stage and in the studio. Their playing together seems so natural and fluid and the instrumentation is as well thought and as smooth as melted margarine. The electric piano, percussion and sax are especially effective in adding an organic blend to the guitar/bass/drums foundation. Mostly recorded at the Pirate House by Slowdime Records co-founder Juan Carrera with an impressive inclusion of live stage recordings, Contemporary Music is a new plateau for instrumental post rock. Yeah, think of a 1970's Slowdime Records mixed with modern indie sensibilities.
