The Memphis Goons
Shangri-La Records
Although this collection has been rumored to be a fake collaboration recorded in the '90s to sound like it was from the
'60s, this scenario could not be further from the truth. Yes, ladies and
gentlemen, truth is better than fiction. These Memphis high school losers were
listening to Captain Beefheart, Frank Zappa, and the like in the early '70s and were not
going to let their redneck roots or their lack of musicianship stop them from
creating their vast body of work in Elvis Presley's shadow in the Memphis suburb of
Whitehaven. Somebody in the band was dumb enough to save the tapes and almost
25 years later they saw the light of day. If you are looking for extreme
music, here it is, in its raw, warbling, neo-psychedelic glory. Fuzzed-out, lo-fi, and nearly incomprehensible, this captures the true spirit of independent music.
