The Donnas
Lookout Records
All right, so The Donnas grew up in the suburbs. Does that make them rock any
less? You only have to listen to one of their songs to know that the answer to that is a
resounding "Hell, no!" The four best friends started rocking together while they were still
in high school (where they were obviously the coolest kids in their class -- look at the
cover art to your right and tell me if you can imagine going to school with The
Donnas). Like The Ramones, The Donnas all have the same name and they make deliciously bouncy three-chord pop-punk. It rules! There's also lots of Joan Jett and the Runaways here, and a bit of lipstick-trash L.A. hair metal a la Skid
Row.
You can't really make a case for the originality of The Donnas' music: there's
no question that they play within established rock and roll idioms, but they do so with
incredible sass and aplomb. They have a terrific sound -- not to mention a terrific look.
What's not to like? The Donnas first emerged back in '98 with a pair of releases:
their self-titled debut and the aptly named American Teenage Rock 'n' Roll
Machine. Soon they were popping up everywhere, including in the Rose
McGowan movie Jawbreaker and on the Detroit Rock City soundtrack. In their spare time they graduated from high school and went to college. In 2000, The
Donnas returned with another collection of hip two-minute rockers, Get
Skintight, featuring "You Don't Wanna Call." If you don't go wild for The
Donnas' deliciously clever three-chord girl-punk, you might want to think about
visiting a psychotherapist because there has got to be something seriously wrong with your
outlook on life.
