The Baldwin Brothers
TVT Records

Until the Baldwin Brothers become a household name, every review of their music is bound to begin with some variation on "No relation to Alec, Billy, Stephen, and Daniel" -- but household name status might not be far away for this Chicago quartet of funky lounge lizards, none of whom are related or named Baldwin. Founders Jason Hinkle (drums) and T.J. Widner (keyboards) should be forgiven for their choice of moniker; the two musicians dubbed their project when they were junior high school kids unfamiliar with the identically named clan of chisel-faced movie stars. It just stuck, so when they grew up and added Jimmy Deer (keyboards, bass) and JB Royal (turntables) to the mix, they kept using it. When the quartet first started laying down tracks in the late '90s, they sought to replicate the classic lounge sounds of the '60s, but in time their music grew increasingly funky, steamy, and soulful, achieving a unique synthesis of lounge kitsch, disco, funk, and acid house. While programming is essential to the Baldwin boys' sound, so is live performance, which gives their music a fresh, warm, and spontaneous feel. The quartet issued their debut LP, the three-years-in-the-making Cooking with Lasers in April 2002. The album's sultry grooves are complemented by a handful of eye-catching guest vocalists, including performances by Miho Hatori (Cibo Matto), Angie Hart (Frente), and Geri Soriano-Lightwood (Supreme Beings Of Leisure).
