Maybe the most famous pupil on the gangsta rap scene, the irrepressible Snoop Dogg, who as we all know rose to prominence as protégé of Dr. Dre, has became a pedagogue himself, mentoring an erstwhile group of Cali rappers known as Tha Eastsidaz. With partners in crime (and rival Long Beach gang members) Tray Deee and Goldie Loc, plus a plethora of guest MCs (Kurupt, Suga Free, Mobb Deep, and more) and crooners (Nate Dogg, Kokane, etc.), Snoop has helped steer West Coast rap into the next century with an increasingly soulful and funky take on the paradigmatic mellow/menacing West Coast sound that goes especially nicely with herb consumption. Tha Eastsidaz debuted in 2000 with a self-titled LP, then returned in 2001 with the Duces 'N Trayz...The Old Fashioned Way.
