Shakeyface, or Doug Smiley to his Brooklyn brethren, is a man with musical knowledge by the bucket load. With a long and successful career on the distribution side, Smiley continues to pursue his own beat-making career in the heart of hip hop country. His Puddle Jumping During A Monsoon mini-LP was picked up by Quatermass, a Belgian label that has also released interesting electronic music from artists such as Andrea Parker, Bill Laswell, and Scanner. The album knits strands of dub, reggae, soul, and jazz into a warm wooly hip hop hoody, with a big B for Brooklyn on the back. With beats reminiscent of DJ Shadow and programming akin to Nightmares On Wax, Mr. Shakey could be abstract hip hop's next big thing.
