Grayhound Records
DJ Garth moved to San Francisco from his native England in the late '80s when the Bay Area scene was in its infancy. He formed the Wicked crew with brothers Jeno, Markie, and Thomas and began throwing parties in and around the Bay Area -- parties that are now a part of the city's underground folklore. Garth set up Grayhound Recordings to showcase the San Francisco house sound the Wicked crew helped shape. The debut release, "Between The Lines," produced by Garth with Eric James (aka E.T.I.) remains a landmark release in club land. The "Down Down Dub" is a smooth organic house track with cunning bongo patterns and a sly low-slung bassline. The "Lost Keys Mix" is more upbeat with echoed kicks and superb dubby synths.
"Between The Lines" marked the beginning of a strong bond between both producers that lives on today. Two years later DJ Garth and E.T.I. produced the highly celebrated "Twenty Minutes Of Disco Glory," for Wicked Records, a tune that attained anthem status on both sides of the Atlantic. Since then this prolific duo has given us "Cisco System," "People," and "Serpent Fire." "Voices Of Freedom" marks a move away from deep organic house into more dynamic bass-heavy territory. More recently, Rocket have teamed up with Rob Paine at Worship Recordings for the club-killer "Standby," which comes with an awesome rework by Solomonic Sound.
Without a doubt, Grayhound Recordings is one of the best labels to come out of San Francisco, and with Rocket continuing to produce such quality tracks, should maintain its high status. This is the real house sound of San Francisco.
