Plaid
Warp Records

Former Black Dog collaborators (with Ken Downie) Ed Handley and Andy Turner have been making electronic music together since the acid house era. From their East London bunker, the duo released their '91 Plaid debut, Mbuki Mvuki, while continuing to push the limits of sonic experimentation under their better known canine pseudonym. After falling out with Downie (who retained the Black Dog moniker), the duo began to focus solely on melancholic electronic as Plaid. Following a successful tour with Icelandic pop sensation Bjork, Handley and Turner released their '97 sophomore album Not For Threes on Sheffield's Warp, followed two years later by Rest Proof Clockwork.

Double Figure is possibly the duo's most accomplished release to date. Combining elements of wistful, folksy breakbeat ("Eyen"), sturdy, innovative funk ("Squance"), and complex, twisted acid ("Ooh Be Do"), the album's 19 tracks are a home headphone listener's fantasy. Much like Boards of Canada, Plaid's electronic fare is inwardly intelligent enough for indie kids yet soulful and upbeat enough for house music heads. For a sampling of the duo's early works, seek out Trainer (also on Warp), which features compositions under their alternative pseudonyms Atypic, Balil, and Tura.
