The info sheet for Patchwork's first album is headlined by the question "Ambient?" The press release for his second album, Odeon, reads "Patchwork unlike many others knows how to meld different elements into his own unique style of music".
Patchwork's music is full of personality and color and, in spite of its floating, atmospheric density, rhythms set the pace. No matter what his influences are, Patchwork -- aka Jens Paulsen -- always manages to incorporate an essential psychedelic moment in his tracks. Paulsen's musical roots are in classical guitar and folk music. He also runs a multicultural gallery. These days he's working at a socio-cultural center in Hamburg spearheading a project involving computers and the creation of electronic music.
