Papa M
Western Vinyl
David Pajo sort of started Papa M in 1995, five years after the demise of his hugely influential band Slint. He pursued the project even while playing with groups like King Kong, Palace, Tortoise, Stereolab, and Royal Trux. Pajo first released a single as M is the Thirteenth Letter on Palace Records. He followed with a split single with Laetitia Sadier of Stereolab under the name M. Next he constucted a completely instrumental album in 1997 and released it on Drag City Records under the moniker Aerial M. By the time of this album, David had achieved total self-sufficiency in performance, engineering, and even art design. Papa M finally became the proper name in 1999 as Drag City released the very well-received Live From A Shark Cage. Again David handled all aspects of the production of this album, but he constructed a live band to tour the world.
He went on to release several more singles and EPs before putting out his latest album Whatever, Mortal on Drag City at the end of 2001. In 2002 he has started on another string of EPs and singles, including this fantastic two-song CD, Songs of Mac, released by our friends at Western Vinyl.
Pajo is a composer of beautiful and haunting music, and a prolific one. Recent output from Papa M can be compared to close relatives Palace, Smog, and also ex-Slint mate Brian McMahan's The For Carnation, to which Pajo has also contributed, all projects that, like Papa M, combine ultra-artistic and avant elements with more traditional folk music.
Papa M will be on hiatus for a good portion of 2002 as David will be busy recording one of the most talked about and anticipated albums in rock history with his newest group Zwan. Zwan features not only Pajo, but also original Smashing Pumpkins members Billy Corgan on guitar and vocals and Jimmy Chamberlin on drums, Matt Sweeney, formerly of Chavez, on vocals and guitar, and Paz Lenchantin, formerly of A Perfect Circle, on the bass.
