Mondo Grosso
Sony Music
Bassist and bandleader Shinichi Osawa formed Mondo Grosso in Kyoto in '89. It took him a while to produce his first album, which was finally released on For Life Records in '93. The self-titled long-player was extremely well received, resulting in an extensive Asian and European tour. Since then, Osawa has enlisted a number of talented session musicians and established vocalists to pad out the Mondo Grosso sound. Familiar names such as N'dea Davenport (Brand New Heavies), Tania Maria, Amel Larrieux (Groove Theory), Monday Michiru, and Bird all appear on MG4, Osawa's fourth album to date on Sony Music (Japan). The album melds elements of 2-step garage, warm New York house, smooth downtempo, and modern R&B to perfection. The "MG Stepped Mix" of "Life" features Bird on the mic and Osawa laying down the crisp, funky 2-step beats. Look out for more from Bird on Osawa's own label, Real Eyes.
