Junior Varsity KM
Darla Records

Yet another of URB Magazine's infamous Next 100 of 1999, and an Electronic Music major at San Francisco State University, Junior Varsity KM (Kenric McDowell) is a self-made icon of San Francisco's drum and bass elite. Since 1998, he has produced a double LP and five 12-inch singles for Darla/Fuzzy Box records, won the BAM Magazine award for Best Electronic Artist, and toured as musical accompaniment for Japanese vocalist Takako Minnekawa.

JVKM is the esteemed international ambassador of jungle, the Nobel laureate of drum and bass, the prize-winning, Ph.D.-garnering wunderkind quantum physics professor who put the science back in breakbeat before he was 24 years old. One of his professors even compared his work favorably with that of German electronic pioneers Tangerine Dream. His uber-ambient textures, complex beats, and geometrically correct rhythms have been remixed by Sweet Trip (another extra-prolific Darla recording artist) and by DJ Swingsett.

JVKM's releases have made waves and Editors' picks from URB to xlr8r to Spin to CMJ, enjoyed college-radio airplay across the U.S., and reached a wide audience in Japan (he enjoys a sizable distribution in both countries).
