John Digweed
Global Underground
John Digweed never wanted to be anything but a DJ. When his mates in his hometown of Hastings were off at the amusement arcade trying to score with the girls, Digweed was becoming a fixture in the clubs, picking up mixing tips. He worked as a gardener for two years to save for his first decks, and shortly after he bought them, he got his first gig ever, at a hotel.
Not long after that, he visited Delerium at Heaven in London and instantly got sucked into this crazy thing called acid house that would define the direction he would take from there on. First he started his own night in Hastings called Bedrock. Then he started the legendary Storm, which debuted with an all-star lineup that included such luminaries as Derrick May, Harvey, and Grooverider. Soon after that, he began playing at Fabio and Grooverider's proto-hardcore weekly, Rage. Then he got a residence at Renaissance, which was what finally propelled him into the DJ Top Ten and enabled him to launch his own Babelicious and Northern Exposure nights.
Global Underground: Sydney showcases Digweed's remarkable range of styles and lengthy, pace-building mixing, although you'll barely notice the changes. These are the telltale signs of a true mixmaster, and of a DJ with a cause, not to mention an arsenal of top tunes.
