Interpol
Matador Records
Interpol has been stylishly building a following in hometown NYC and in Europe with a series of releases on the Scottish label Chemikal Underground. After Matador Records signed the group and released their debut EP and their heavily buzzed full-length Turn on the Bright Lights in August 2002, Interpol immediately became one of the most talked-about new bands around.
No one can deny the recent influence of '80s sounds in newly arisen indie projects, and Interpol definitely represents a branch of this phenomenon. Their echoing guitars sound like an angular stab at The Cure or The Jesus and Mary Chain and their spacey washes flood over the songwriting and vocals in a manner remniscent of old Michael Stipe. A minimal and driving rhythm section takes control like old washy organ-soaked Stereolab records. Interpol isn't rehashing old sounds, they are taking influence from great bands from the '80s and revamping a sound that is one hundred percent current and interesting. And their sound and aesthetic continue to emerge and develop.
