Far Apart
Crank Records
They took their name from a Cure song, but don't expect any gothic synth-pop shenanigans from this Swedish four-piece. Nope, they play dense, layered, melodic alt-rock anthems. Founded in 1995 by singer and guitarist Mats Oldham as an alternative to the punk, death metal, and jazz fusion he was hearing everywhere, Far Apart has grown into a musical powerhouse with a tunefully loud sound somewhere between Jawbox and the Foo Fighters. Will Oldham is ably assisted by singer/bassist Kalle Nyman, guitarist Stefan Sundstrom, and drummer Tomas Nilsen. The group's "Hazel" seven-inch first appeared on Sweden's Carcrash label before being licensed to Crank! in 1998.
