Eels
Dreamworks Records

In his early 20s, Mark Oliver Everett moved to Los Angeles to pursue a music career. As a solo artist in the early '90s, he released two albums on Polydor Records with little success. Then he formed Eels and signed with Dreamworks Records. Eels' first album Beautiful Freak reaped the group immediate success in sales, radio, and on MTV where the "Novocaine for the Soul" video played constantly. The next album Electro-Shock Blues was an even greater success but still failed to thrust the group into superstardom. 2000's Daisies of the Galaxy met with a warm but still limited response; however, Eels seized the promotion of this album as an opportunity to put together the six piece Eels Orchestra which featured each group member playing three or four instruments a night. The Orchestra even released a CD through its website called Oh, What A Beautiful Morning.

E conceptualized Eels' fourth album, Souljacker, on a zen retreat during which he wasn't allowed to write, read, or talk for ten days. He scribbled a song on some toilet paper in the bathroom and the album began to take shape. E was fascinated with a serial killer in the '90s known as "Soul Jacker" in the press, who claimed to not only kill, but also to steal the souls of his victims. In 2002, Eels released the Electro-Shock Blues Show, a live album to promote the Souljacker tour, recorded live from a European tour for the Electro-Shock Blues album. The live album is available on CD through the Eels web site.
