DJ Spinna

Brooklyn has spawned many a hip hop sensation, but few as talented as DJ Spinna. As a DJ, he has scratched and transformed his way across most of the States. As a producer, he has worked with everyone from De La Soul to Eminem to Nightmares on Wax to Rae & Christian. For his Rawkus Records album, Heavy Beats Volume 1, the Spin-meister collaborated with a veritable who's who of hip hop, including Eminem, Talib Kweli and DJ Hi-Tek, Al Tariq (Beatnuts), Problemz, Apani B-Fly Emcee, Thirstin Howell, Joc Max, and Black Attack (and that's not all of 'em). The album went on to become one of Rawkus's best selling releases.

Always pushing forward, Spinna followed with a rare groove compilation for the super trendy BBE label. Entitled Strange Games and Things, the album features classic tracks and hard-to-find gems from artists such as Bobby Womack, Roy Ayers, and The Love Unlimited Orchestra. High from the success, Spinna went on to found his own label, Beyond Real, with MC Kriminul. Focusing on quality underground hip hop, the label has showcased the talents of up-and-coming artists such as I.G. Off and Hazardous, Shadowman, Dome Crackers, Old World Disorder, Basement Khemist, Mr. Akil, and Jigmastas. It is Spinna's profound knowledge of urban music that has given him the edge over his competitors. With the precision of a Cirque du Soleil tightrope walker, he balances older influences of '70s funk, rare groove, and Latin jazz with dope beats most producers only dream of. His Beyond Real vinyl cuts, "DJ Song" and "Speed," are mellow summer jams laden with classic vocal samples and warm jazzy vibes. If you've not experienced Spinna's style, this is the perfect introduction.
