Deanna Varagona

Deanna Varagona has been a longtime member of the warped Nashville neo-countrypolitan ensemble Lambchop and has also lent her talent as a vocalist and saxophonist to such artists as Vic Chestnutt, Chris Mills, Ladybug Transistor, Bevel, M. Ward, Yo La Tengo, Neutral Milk Hotel, and a number of others. The Southern-born Varagona also records under her own name, crafting sparse windblown acoustic music descended from the Appalachian folk tradition, which bears some resemblance to the poignant work of other Southern-born practitioners of modern mountain music such as Sarah White and Paula Frazer. Varagona played most of the instruments (sax, organ, acoustic guitar, lap steel, mandolin, and marimbas) on her debut full-length Tangled Messages on Star Star Stereo Records, getting assistance on some songs from guests such as Mills, Charles Kim (Pinetop Seven), and Julian Koster (Neutral Milk Hotel). Her sublime, pathos-filled reading of Kris Kristofferson's "Burden of Freedom" appears on Incidental's terrific tribute to the bearded cowboy poet, which also features contributions from Richard Buckner, Califone, The Radar Bros., Grandaddy, Howe Gelb, Calexico, and countless others.
