This is yummy pop. It's not too sweet, not too heavy -- just yummy. In searching for the perfect pop hook, musician and artist Archer Prewitt (of The Sea and Cake and The Coctails; also creator of the excellent Sof' Boy comic) earnestly explores the realm of '60s and '70s AM radio (Herman's Hermits, Steely Dan, The Bee Gees), plumbing anything with sweet harmonies and lush orchestral swells of strings and horns that engulf timeless pop hooks. The results will make you think of summer days, open roads, and long-buried memories. Despite the yummy goodness, these songs are tinged with a melancholy and introspection that sets them apart from vapid pop ephemera. This music is as sophisticated and comforting as it is delicious.
After recording prolifically with the Coctails and Sea and Cake throughout the '90s, the Chicago-based musician has focused increasingly on his solo work in recent years. "Good Man" and "In the Sun" are from Prewitt's 1997 debut album, In the Sun. "Final Season" and "Raise on High" are from his majestic, orchestral sophomore effort, 1999's White Sky. "Waves Waltz" and "Tell Me Now" come from his haunting, ethereal 2000 release, Gerroa Songs, an eight-song EP recorded live on an eight-track in a house by the ocean in Gerroa, New South Wales, Australia. As all of these songs demonstrate, Prewitt is a marvelously gifted musician who has quietly become one of the best singer-songwriters around.
