Anjali
Wiiija Records/Beggars Group
Anjali Bhatia is a woman on a mission. After fronting the all-female riot-grrrl combo Voodoo Queens in the early '90s, Bhatia opted to pursue a solo career as Anjali. When we say solo, we mean solo. Bhatia is a DJ, singer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer rolled into one. Her textured downtempo sound tapestries caught the attention of Wiiija, who duly signed her to their growing roster of artists (such as Cornershop, Mucho Mucho, and Brassy). Bhatia wasted no time in releasing four singles -- "Maharani," "Ju-Ju," "Aquila," and "Feline Woman" -- which form the basis of her full-length compilation, Sheer Witchery.
"Strawberry Mousse," featured on Anjali's eponymous full-length and the single "Lazy Lagoon," is produced with Spykid, who gained his reputation working alongside Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Neil Halstead (Mojave 3, Slowdive), Ui, Fuxa, and Jurassic 5. Together they create a thick dough of hip hop beats and funky '70s basslines topped with Bhatia's bittersweet vocals. This devilishly delicious dessert should be ordered by fans of Moloko, Portishead, and Saint Etienne.
