Alasdair Roberts
Secretly Canadian Records
Alasdair Roberts, longtime singer of the Scottish folk ensemble Appendix Out and collaborator to Songs: Ohia's Jason Molina, Will Oldham, and others, has at last ventured out onto the solo stage. This alone would be enough to make old fans happy, but what's even better about Roberts's solo debut, The Crook of My Arm, is that it consists entirely of traditional songs of the British Isles. In other words, here Roberts strips Appendix Out's fragile, ethereal style straight to its spiritual core. Nothing here but Roberts's plaintive, watery tenor and gentle acoustic guitar chords meditatively sketching out the timeless folksongs of Wales, Scotland, and England. As softly beautiful as heather on the moor. Recommended.
