Martina Topley-Bird
Anything
Palm
Quixotic, former Tricky co-vocalist Martina Topley-Bird's debut, found much success at home in the UK, where it was nominated for the 2003 Mercury Prize. However, the album lagged in finding US distribution, and in 2004 PalmPalm took over and released a redesigned and re-sequenced version in the States, dubbed Anything after the opening track and using images from its Floria Sigismondi-directed video on the sleeve.
While fusing the sounds of lounge and jazz standards, soul, rock, trip-hop and electronica, Anything defies stifling classifications and possesses a timelessness that many works in those latter two genres fell short of achieving. The presence of guests Tricky, DJ/producer David Holmes and Queens of the Stone Age members Joshua Homme and Mark Lanegan give a clue as to the well-rounded nature of the album. But Topley-Bird's own sultry voice and talents for songwriting and production are responsible for this lush and memorable debut. Anyone who found her irresistible on Tricky's albums would appreciate Anything for its solid and sophisticated beauty.
